Something I wanted to share… Some of you may have already made this connection, but it’s one that I only made the other day (with some help from my sister) yes, on the rare occasion I am a bit slow with these things haha
I love Stephane Pompougnac’s Hôtel Costes Compilations. From the first song I ever heard off his compilations, I’m always keen to see what he will put out next. One of my favourite songs on the Volume 9 of Hôtel Costes is a song called Bluebird by One Self (DJ Vadim, Yarah Bravo and Blu Rum 13) you may have heard it on my Jozi Mixxxtape here… So there’s this sample on the hook, I always used to sing along, all day, luuurving it… Turns out it’s the first few lines of a song called ‘Quit It’ by our very own Mama Africa, the late Miriam Makeba
“you take drugs to psyche your mind
you take wine to forget about time
you create a world of your own
where the truth will never be known”
I’m sure many of you can relate… Beautiful song, with a message but we’ll have to do another blog post to talk about that…
I guess it’s always lovely to hear the original and then how it’s used on another track so here you go
Miriam’s Quit It:
and the Hôtel Costes version of One Self’s Blue Bird:
DOEP songs right?
Here’s the video for the album version of Bluebird where you get to hear both emcees from One Self
